Learning Experiences

Writing Ignition has been a process full of learning experiences that we would never have been educated on otherwise. I (Brooke) personally didn't even know that you could have either print on demand or a large supply already available for purchase! I don't know what I thought, but I guess I never really had to think about it until it was my job to. We started out as print on demand, where one book is printed when someone ordered one, because for a couple of people just trying to get their work out there, that was the easiest and quickest way. Now, we have a lot of books printed that are being stored, so they're available whenever you want to pick up a copy! We also learned about the different types of editors. We used a line editor and a copy editor. The line editor's job is to basically go through the whole book and mark any spelling, grammer, or formatting mistakes; whereas a copy editor basically reviews the content of your story and tells you which concepts, characters, themes, etc. can and should be elaborated on or changed. A copy editor basically gives you their opinion on how to make your book better and what you can do to make it more enjoyable for the reader. One last thing we learned about were ISBNs. An ISBN is the long number on the back of the book underneath the barcode. This is basically like the book's social security number of sorts, meaning that every book has a different number. The ISBN is specific for each version of any book so that it is easily identifiable by it's tracking number. This means that if a book that was originally printed in paperback is now made available in a hard cover, you would need a new ISBN. The same goes for if you decide you want to design a new book cover for the exact same book. This is so that it is easy to find and order the exact book you want, without any confusion. I hope you learned something new!

The Long Hual

Does anyone else caffeinate and then make extraordinary goals and plans?  Mountain Dew Kickstart is my pick me up beverage of choice lately, and when I sip on one, I suddenly feel capable of conquering the world. I think I freaked out my writing partner Brooke Estrada a few days ago when I texted her, “It might be the caffeine talking, but I have an idea....let’s finish the rough draft for Shadow Descending by the end of December.” Just a little info on where we’re at... we’ve got some basic notes and a rough first chapter. We’d previously had a goal to have Shadow Descending done in August of 2019. Brooke is getting underway with it a bit as she has time, but I’m finishing up another project and not contributing much yet. I won’t be jumping in with her and focusing on Shadow Descending until December. That’s when we plan to rev it up and begin constant work on it. So....  writing a book that will be approximately 100,000 words in length in a little over a month is a bit more of a daunting task than the caffeine and my ego want to admit. Brooke admitted she was relieved when I reached out a few days later and said, “Yeah, it was the caffeine talking. We’re not going to write Shadow Descending before the end of the year. That’s a bit of a stretch.”

When the caffeine high ended and I came back down to Earth, I had to remind myself that writing is not some get rich quick scheme. And that the vast majority of authors don’t become millionaires or bestsellers - and certainly not over night. That being said, I don’t doubt the potential of the Luminescent Calling series Brooke and I are writing together or any of my other manuscripts, but I have finally come to terms with the fact that as a writer, nothing reallly happens as fast as you like. There is so much to this process that you just have to settle in for the long haul.

If you are an aspiring author with hopes of writing a bestseller and becoming rich and famous,  I would ask you this: If you won the lottery and became filthy rich, would you still write? If the answer is no, because you would have plenty of money and no need to sell books, then you are probably writing for the wrong reasons. If the answer is yes, then congratulations. You have developed a love for this craft and would enjoy writing regardless of your circumstances! I must confess that I was probably guilty of being in the first group when I started out writing nearly 3 years ago. I was getting burned out at my day job and viewed writing a bestseller as my ticket out of the monotony and into fame-land. How hard can it be? I thought. People like J.K. Rowling went from rags to riches after writing a book, surely I could do the same thing- and then all my problems would disappear! Sound familiar?

As the reality set in of how difficult the writing process is and how competitive this market is, I got a bit depressed and fizzled out. I’d only survived maybe a month of writing and about ten pages! I gave up and moved the idea to the back burner for an entire year. Then, after all that time, I decided to revisit the idea of writing a book. Again my intentions were probably not entirely as they should have been, because I was motivated to be free of a not so pleasant supervisor and viewed writing as a potential escape. But, as I rekindled the idea of writing a book, I went into it with eyes wide open. I hoped it would be successful, but understood it would not be easy at all. I treated like a job. I mentally prepared myself for the grind and decided I would will it to happen. From that point forward, I wrote many days each week. I stayed up late and went into work tired, but little by little, the words began to pile up. And then something amazing happened.... I fell in love with writing. As I got into grooves and scene unfolded in my mind, sometimes I couldn’t write them down fast enough. I think what I loved most was when something unexpected popped up as I was writing and I got to discover something new about the story, just as a reader would. Somewhere along the line, writing no longer felt like work and I joined the 2nd group - the ones that would keep writing, even if they were filthy rich.

Discovering my passion for writing has been quite a process indeed. Although I can truly say I will be a writer for life because I love it, I still have to occasionally remind myself that it’s a long process that doesn’t need to be rushed because we want to get our manuscript to market as soon as possible. We have to be in it for the long hual. It took me a little while to realize how involved the process actually is to complete a manuscript, get it edited and published - so sometimes (when I’m hopped up on caffeine) I get these ideas that I can cheat the process and take the fast track to success, but there isn’t one.

I was inspired recently by something I read in On Writing by Steven King. I’m not sure how I viewed him previously, but I think it was something close to an instant success. I didn’t know much about his history and assumed he probably struck gold with the first thing he ever wrote and has been writing bestsellers ever since, but that’s not the case. Steven started writing from the time he was very young. As a boy he submitted countless stories to magazines. Each time he received a rejection letter, he’d stick it on a nail he had stuck in his wall. Eventually he had so many, the nail fell out of the wall and he had to replace it with a big spike. Steven continued to write and get rejected all throughout his young life. It was until after he’d finished his degree and began working as a poor teacher that he began to see serious success that paid him the big bucks.

So what’s the point? It’s ok to set challenging goals and have high expectations, but we must remember that success doesn’t normally come to those that haven’t worked hard for it for an extended period of time. It’s a process indeed and we must be in it for the long haul. This is a lesson I’m still learning. We don’t have to rush, we just need to keeping consistently working at this creative process that we love. If we do, amazing things will happen! Even if we don’t get rich in the end, we’ll have taken some characters and readers on a grand adventure - and that inand of itself is amazing!

Hey everyone!

We haven't posted for a while, so this is just an update of all the crazy things that have happened the last couple months. We're going to be posting regularly from now on, so stay tuned!

I guess we'll start in July, when Ignition was published. We were so incredibly happy to receive the email, telling us that a company wanted to publish our book. OUR BOOK! The news so exciting we almost didn't know what to do with ourselves; but we got right to work on resizing the cover and making all of our final revisions to Ignition. We even got several different original proofs of the book! Soon enough, our dream had become a reality. After Ignition was officially published, we were able to get it onto Amazon to order as a paperback and then later, onto Amazon Kindle. The process was a little bit longer than we expected, but it's on Amazon now, which means pretty much anyone in the world can order it, and that is really cool. The Amazon printers ended up not being very good quality, so we switched to someone else temporarily. Then, with a lot of emailing back and forth, we finally switched to what we hope is our long term printing company, which is good because they have better quality printing and binding. If we decide to switch again though, it won't be for a while because we already printed a lot of books, so we have our supplier set for now!

We're so excited about our amazing book cover! We should have an order of our books within the next couple weeks and we'll be needing some local bookstores to carry it. We think the cover is so intriguing and we hope you all think so too. Everyone says "don't judge a book by it's cover", but let's be honest, I think we all do. The cover is what makes you pick up the book in the first place, right? It's the first look into the adventure ahead. It's coming out soon. The wait is almost over. 

Inspirations and imagination.

We all have inspirations...book inspirations that is.   Stories that grab our attention and pull us in. Characters that become alive in our minds that we grow attached to and love.  We cheer for their triumphs and shed tears for their sorrows.  A great story can give us good friends, new passions and ignite our imagination.  

For Brooke, that inspiration, that love for reading and imagination really began with Harry Potter.  She is truly a super fan.  For several years, she spoke regularly in an English accent and quite convincingly. She knows the story of Harry Potter, inside and out.  She knows the characters birthdays, she knows random facts about their families, their towns, their foods, their likes, their loves and their struggles.  She knows and loves those characters because she is passionate about the story. She has read all of the books several times, they are well worn and have been sitting prominently next to her bed for years.  (She owns all the movies, although she is the first to say they aren't as good as the books.) She reads the stories to her siblings regularly.  She quotes the books randomly in conversations.  This series has become a part of Brooke's life, from clothing to jewelry to decor.  She, along with millions of other readers,  caught the vision and the story came to life for her. 

A while back Brooke's birthday wish was to spend her birthday at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter... so her family made that birthday wish come true.  She got to celebrate with some of her favorite people in one of her favorite places and her co-author and uncle happen to be one of them.  Here are the Luminescent Writers together enjoying the imagination of a wonderful author and role model, JK Rowling, brought to life.

 This.  This is what a good book can do. All of this from the imagination of one person. What amazing possibilities exist within our minds. We  hope that a few people will fall in love with our characters and our stories.  There are whole worlds out there just waiting to come to life on the pages of the books we write.  Let's see where they take us!

Nike Has the Best Slogan, Especially When it Comes to Writing

There is no "how does one begin?" or "where does one begin?" there is simply beginning. There is simply doing... or "Just do it" you might say...

 Yes, even though a sportswear brand might not seem to have much to do with writing, I've always loved Nike's slogan. It incites action. It demands results and progress. When it comes to writing, we love to talk don't we? We love to dream too. We talk and dream about all the wonderful, suspenseful, emotional and compelling things we are going to write about (and how we're going to spend our millions once we're famous). I've been guilty of this before on many occasions. Far too many of us only talk and dream and not much more. And whatever it was that we thought we might write, gets pushed to the back burner by everyday activities that just can't wait, like watching tv, playing video games, Facebook stalking people, or napping. Don't use work as an excuse. We all work. We're all busy. We all have families with needs. It's that wasted in-between time that we all have at least a little bit of that we can choose to do more with. That wonderful idea you have, that one that's going to inspire me and countless others, doesn't have to stay in the forgotten cobwebs of your mind collecting dust. Simply stop talking, stop dreaming and start writing. Just do it! Cut out some of the other junk from your life and make time for writing. That's what I did, and now I have a completed manuscript! But nothing happened until I took action one day and wrote down a crappy first sentence! Who knows what's going to happen with this first book (Ignition by Andrew Smith and Brooke Estrada) but I'm not just going to sit around and twittle my thumbs and begin daydreaming again. I'm shifting into high gear and carrying my momentum right over into another project. I'm six chapters into my next book and I only started writing it on June 1st! Yep. Get on my level. With a little luck, this sucker might be done before the end of summer! After that, I'll start writing something else. I once dreamed of even completing one book, and now that I've committed to consistent writing, things are happening faster than I originally thought possible. That's all because of action. Join the club. Take action today and write something. Just do it! And to Nike I say... you're welcome. (Yes I will gladly promote and wear your products if you donate them to my cause of "Doing" :)
